Power Shut-Offs Spike in PA

Allentown Morning Call:

Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, PPL cut electricity to 28,561 customers, according to figures released last week by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

That’s a boost of 111 percent over the number of PPL customers whose power was shut off during the same period in 2007.

The number of people who’ve lost electricity statewide is up as well versus the same period last year, but only by 24 percent.

Buffett to Buy Constellation

After watching Constellation Energy’s stock tumble 60 percent since Monday, famed investor Warren Buffet stepped in this morning to buy the Baltimore-based utility for $4.7 billion.

The transaction announced shortly after 9 a.m. has Mr. Buffet’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. engaging in a cash-and-stock deal to buy Constellation — the parent of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., which provides gas and electricity to most homes in Anne Arundel County.

350,000 Without Power

Power went out for as many as 350,000 Entergy Corp. (ETR) customers in and around New Orleans, La., the regional electricity company reported Monday, as Hurricane Gustav lashed areas of coastal Louisiana with rains that witnesses described as horizontal.

Gustav whipped up shrieking winds, fearsome rain and isolated tornadoes as it made landfall just before 1500 GMT Monday west-southwest of Cocodrie, La., about 70 miles southwest of New Orleans.

Electric Rates in PA

The Harrisburg (PA) Patriot-News:

In what it sees as a wake-up call for electric customers, the state Public Utility Commission released a study showing residential electric bills in Pennsylvania would increase an average 43 percent if rate caps came off tomorrow.

The PUC plans to run the numbers quarterly, in part to warn customers about what will happen when rate caps expire in 2010 and 2011.

Grid in Good Shape

USA Today:

Five years after the worst blackout in U.S. history, the nation’s electrical system is far better equipped to prevent another big outage, but significant shortcomings remain, federal officials, grid operators and consultants agree.

Since the blackout on Aug. 14, 2003, which affected 50 million people in the Northeast, Midwest and part of Canada, federal regulators have approved standards for upkeep of the power grid. And utilities have new systems to monitor the network.

SCE&G Wants to Build Nukes

State utility regulators were officially advised Wednesday about additional filings concerning a request by South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. to begin work on the site of two proposed nuclear reactors.

SCE&G, which is owned by Scana Corp., and state-owned utility Santee Cooper want to build and operate two additional reactors, estimated to cost about $10 billion, at their V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Columbia to meet increased demand for power.

FERC Approves Allegheny Transmission Line

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday approved the rate of return requested by Allegheny Energy Inc. on its proposed Trans-Allegheny Interstate power line.

As approved by the commission, the Greensburg-based energy company will be allowed a 12.7 percent profit on its investment.

GM’s Volt

USAToday:

General Motors (GM) has joined with more than 30 utility companies across the U.S. to help work out electricity issues that will crop up when it rolls out new electric vehicles in a little more than two years.

The Detroit automaker said the partnership, which includes the Electric Vehicle Research Institute and large utilities such as Southern California Edison and Duke Energy (DUK), will deal with issues from tax incentives for the vehicles to where and when they can be plugged in for recharging.

PPL Fined for Fish Kills in PA

Lancaster New Era:

The state has fined PPL for two fish kills at its Brunner Island power plant along the Susquehanna River in York County, across from Bainbridge.

Previous fish kills had occurred at Brunner Island in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

In addition to a $77,500 fine for the two fish kills in October 2007 and this past March, the state Department of Environmental Protection has ordered PPL to take actions to prevent future fish kills.
